The 2022 Kia Seltos and the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross offer plenty of utility and style in small SUV packages. Here’s how they compare.
2022 Kia Seltos
Above Average: All-wheel drive standard on virtually all models; impressive cargo space; available turbo engine; excellent warranty; KBB Subcompact SUV Best Buy.
Below Average: Dual-clutch 7-speed transmission a bit wonky; the base engine could use more power.
Consensus: With its fresh styling, comfortable cabin, and ample cargo space, the 2022 Kia Seltos is one of the top small SUVs on the market. With its optional turbo engine, the Seltos also delivers solid performance. New for ’22 is a Nightfall Edition turbo model.
2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross
Above Average: Great warranty; available all-wheel drive; smooth engine.
Below Average: Single engine choice; weak resale values; tight rear legroom; rear visibility.
Consensus: Powered by a spunky 1.5-liter turbo, the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a distinctive, angular small SUV that includes a good suite of safety tech, optional all-wheel drive, and an impressive warranty.
Seltos vs. Eclipse Cross: Urban Outfitters
The 2022 Kia Seltos neatly slots between the Soul and Sportage. Two 4-cylinder engines are available, including a turbo with a dual-clutch transmission that makes the Seltos spry. Models with the base engine and CVT also feel quite light on their feet. The Seltos is a cinch to drive and park.
An AWD system with a locking differential is standard on all but the base S, giving the Seltos some off-road capability. Forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, and driver-attention monitor safety features are now standard on all models.
Though small on the outside, the Seltos has best-in-class cargo space and a roomy 5-passenger cabin. The interior features some thoughtful touches, including some below-floor storage in the rear.
The Kia SUV also packs class-above technology like standard Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and available premium equipment such as a 10.25-inch touchscreen. New this year is the Nightfall Edition which replaces the previous S Turbo. It sports blacked-out exterior accents including roof rails and side sills.
Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross
The 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross skipped the 2021 model year and instead returns with a new look that adds some length and cargo space, along with a revamped rear hatch. Gone is the split window in favor of a single pane.
Power comes from a 152-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder which mates to a CVT. The Eclipse Cross is not wildly athletic, but its low-end torque propels it confidently and its precise steering makes it a good city driver.
Embodying a trend that has popped up throughout the small SUV class, the Eclipse Cross is notable for its sloping rear roofline, which gives it a more coupe-like profile but unfortunately also cuts into cargo space. Thanks to a body that’s 5.5 inches longer, the load area is improved over the 2020 model.
The Eclipse Cross is front-wheel drive, but AWD is an option across all trims. The base ES is decently equipped, though, with automatic climate control, a 7-inch audio screen, and a front USB port. Unfortunately, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto is not available until you reach the LE trim. Most desirable safety and driver-assist features are left to the higher trim levels as well. Resale values have typically not been strong, but the Eclipse Cross does come with a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty similar to Kia’s.
Powertrain warranties: base horsepower.
2022 Kia Seltos Advantages
Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; two engine choices; advanced tech; fuel economy.
2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Advantages
Solid low-end torque; coupe-like profile; NHTSA 5-star safety.
Which Is Right For Me?
The 2022 Kia Seltos is a smart-looking small SUV that offers AWD standard on all trims but one. It offers abundant passenger and cargo room in a tidy package to go with plenty of standard advanced tech including safety assists.
The 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross offers good driving dynamics, affordable pricing, and sporty looks. The revamped body adds more cargo space and better visibility out the rear.
